Interview With Tampa Artist & Engineer Skyler Gibbons

Thanks for your time today, how are things going?

Things are going great, enjoying life and excited for all the opportunities on the table.

Where are you from, and how do you think that has impacted where you are today?.

I am from Knoxville, TN.
Where I’m from taught me so much about hard work and humble beginnings. Growing up I watched how hard my mother and father worked to keep us stable and it inspired me to work just as hard to get us out of that situation.

Tell us what inspired you to get into the booth and record for the first time?

It all goes back to high school. My friends and I downloaded Audacity (a free internet recording software) and we started recording freestyles over our favorite instrumentals. We would do this for hours and hours, I found myself always being the one pressing record and trying to make things sound better.

What is the most rewarding part of creating music?

The most rewarding part of the creation process for me would have to be the opportunity to innovate. I love pushing boundaries and discovering new ways to use certain tools. I can’t use the same stuff or do the same process for too long because it ends up getting boring. When I feel myself getting bored I know it’s time to switch things up. Keeping it fresh is very important for my mental health.

What do you like to do to get into a creative space when you’re writing your music?

I like to grab some Starbucks, clear my mind, and get to work.

How long have you been an artist?

I’ve been working at this for about 12 years.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up primarily in Tennessee near Gatlinburg, however, I moved around a lot as a kid to places like Chicago, Las Vegas, and even Lansing, Michigan.

What are the challenges of being an artist?

The main challenge for me is meeting my own expectations. I feel like I am my worst critic and often I feel like I’ll never be able to do enough. I use that as fuel to keep pushing.

Are you planning on releasing new music soon?

Of course, I’m in the studio every day working.

Do you have any upcoming show dates in the near future?

Not as of right now, but maybe I’ll go on a tour soon with an artist friend.

Who’s one artist you would like to collab with?

If he was still alive, Biggie for sure.
Kanye West is a very close 2nd.

What is one message you would give to your fans?

If I can do it, you can do it. Work hard to stand out.
