Olympic gymnast Sunisa lee who rose to her peak of fame this summer during the Tokyo Olympics. Sunisa who won a gold medal for the individual woman’s all-around competition was unfortunately pepper sprayed in Los Angeles recently and taunted with racial slurs.
As she was patiently waiting for an Uber with a group of friends who were all Asian Americans, a car drove by and the passengers inside hollered racial slurs and told Lee and her friends “that they needed to go back to where they came from.” As that happened she also stated that someone in the vehicle sprayed her with pepper spray.
As she was obviously frustrated, violated and hurt she felt like there was nothing she can do about it as they drove off.
There has been numerous attacks and hate crimes on Asian Americans especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, as many as 9,000 incidents have been reported. The theory that the virus which supposedly stemmed from China, has evidently raised the rates of hate crimes to Asian Americans in the last year.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sunisa Lee and her friends who experienced this incident.
